The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin the first phase of the most awaited ‘Textile museum’, which will document, archive, and represent Mumbai’s textile history and will throw light on the life of the city’s mill workers through a light and sound show.
To carry out the project, J J School of Arts was selected as a project advisor and according to which, The first phase, an area of approximately one acre or 7,000 sqm will be beautified where seven structures will be reconstructed, the landscaping and rejuvenation of the pond will be done, an old chimney will be restored and an amphitheatre will be placed.
The said proposal has been sent to the standing committee for an approval.

In the second phase, nearly 37,000 sqft of the area will be developed where Indian textile galleries, exhibition spaces, a showcase of generations of mill workers, different machines, and other historical aspects, will be put up.
The said museum will come up at the defunct United Mill compound in Kalachowki and will be spread on 16.3 acres of land.
