On Wednesday, July 13, morning, an electrician (35) and his teenage daughter were crushed below the debris after big boulders fell down the forested hillock and destroyed their brick-wall house at the base of Vasai's (East), Wagralpada, reports stated.

Based on accounts, eleven people, including the victim's wife and son escaped with minor injuries. A dog squad took over five hours to find the victims below the debris, with the rescue work being impacted owing to incessant rainfall.

According to narratives, while Amit Thakur's body was found at nearly 11 am, his daughter Roshni's (14) body was found an hour later. In light of the landslide, over 100 residents of the surrounding chawls were moved to a shelter.

Reports suggest that district officials visited the location and inspected the rescue effort. Further, a team of NDRF assisted fire brigade personnel with the rescue operation.

Moreover, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde proclaimed an ex gratia of INR 6 lakh to the family of the dead. Of this, INR 4 lakh will be given from the district disaster management fund, while INR 2 lakh by the municipal corporation. Shinde also declared INR 50,000 to the injured.

It has been reported that builders, land owner were amongst the five booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and under the MRTP Act. The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation also registered two FIRs, however, no arrests have been made yet.

If narratives are to be believed the areas where the mishap occurred are notorious for land mafia building brick walls and tin sheet roof chawls overnight. Allegedly, four years ago, a municipal and police squad had arrived for demolition, but they were driven away by locals who were pelting stones and burning vehicles.
