Maharashtra: Rain Toll Breaches 90, Many Evacuated

Throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, people residing in low-lying areas were evacuated following the water levels in certain rivers breached the danger mark.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rainfall in PalgharThane, Raigad, Nashik, Pune and Kolhapur for three days.

With heavy rains continuing to lash most parts of Maharashtra on Wednesday, July 13, many rain-related mishaps and disruptions were reported. According to accountd, nearly eight deaths were reported in 24 hours which took the toll this monsoon to more than 90. 

Throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, people residing in low-lying areas were evacuated following the water levels in certain rivers that breached the danger mark. For instance, the Kalyan creek and the Ulhas river rose over the danger levels. 

According to reports, flood water entered 200 homes in Kalyan and cattle sheds with 3,000 buffaloes were affected. Further, those living in low-lying areas in Badlapur were also asked to shift. 

In Palghar district, the Vaitarna and Pinjal were near the danger mark owing to which villagers were alerted. Many bridges in the district were shut.

Throughout Maharashtra, nearly 8,000 were evacuated from low-lying areas where water levels breached the danger mark. Two people also died and 11 were injured in a landslide in Vasai. Moreover, a death was reported in a structure collapse in Raigad. 

Based on accounts, a man was swept away in a river in Nanded, four bodies were recovered a day following a car with sex people being swept away in the flood in Nagpur's Sawner. In many districts, villages were cut off due to rising waters. 

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was quoted in reports elaborating on how the administration was assessing the condition. Similarly, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis added that collectors have been asked to ensure smooth relief operations as well as early evacuation to curtail risk to life and property.

Moreover, 16 rescue teams were put throughout severely affected districts. A landslide shut the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway near Manor. It took nine hours to open a lane for traffic. 

Additionally, when the Murbadi river began overflowing, traffic on the Kalyan-Ahmednagar highway was also halted, narratives cited.
