The Maharashtra government has approved a free land to Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) for setting up a super speciality hospital at Achole in Nalasopara.

The decision was announced after a cabinet meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday, September 23. It is pertinent to note that the decision on the hospital comes ahead of the civic polls in which the BJP is eyeing a win.

This land in Mauje-Achole was reserved for the District Court and residential area. Therefore, the proposal to change this reservation and transfer the land for the hospital was approved.

Considering Vasai-Virar's rapidly growing population and the citizens' need for modern healthcare facilities, MLA Rajan Balkrishna Naik had requested the land be given to the Municipal Corporation free of charge. Accordingly, the land has been handed over to the civic body with terms and conditions.

The Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation, established in 2009, has no major hospital, despite a population exceeding 28 lakh. Most residents travel to Mira Road, Borivali and Andheri for treatment. Considering the rapidly growing population of Vasai-Virar and the citizens’ need for modern healthcare facilities, the demand for a hospital has been a long-standing one.

Although the government had earlier sanctioned a INR 250 crore project and released INR 25 crore to the municipal corporation, construction could not begin due to the non-transfer of land.

The corporation is to ensure that no encroachment takes place on this land.
