Vegetable prices in Thane have surged by 20 to 30 per cent due to intense summer heat affecting production and supply across key agricultural regions.

Traders said that soaring temperatures in early May have led to crop damage, water scarcity, and transportation issues, resulting in a decline in the arrival of vegetables in city markets.

The impact is visible across both leafy and regular vegetables, with items such as beans, bottle gourd, cabbage, brinjal, peas, spinach, and fenugreek witnessing reduced supply. Prices of several vegetables have increased sharply, with French beans jumping from INR 60 per kg to INR 160 per kg, while green chillies rose from INR 60 to INR 100 per kg.

Other vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and gourds have also seen noticeable price hikes, while leafy vegetables have become costlier by INR 10– INR 20 per bundle.

Officials said Thane markets largely depend on supply from regions like Nashik, Pune, and Satara. However, extreme heat has reduced crop yields and affected transportation, leading to lower arrivals and higher retail prices.

The rising prices have directly impacted household budgets, with residents feeling the pinch of increased daily expenses. Traders have warned that if high temperatures persist, the supply crunch and price rise could continue in the coming weeks.
