Wadala's Port Trust bridge on the Harbour Line has been shut down since Monday for repair work. Since the last month, many bridges have been listed for dismantling which includes Foot-Over Bridges (FOB) at Diva, Kalyan, Vidyavihar, Bhandup, Mulund, Tilaknagar, Govandi and Kurla.
The Elphinstone Road (now Prabhadevi) stampede which resulted in the loss of many lives resulted due to chaos on the FOB as it was raining and people were rushing towards the bridge to avoid getting wet. The situation becomes worse when two trains come simultaneously at one platform and the density of crowd increases.
