A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official has announced that the water cut imposed in Mumbai will continue until its reservoirs do not reach 75 per cent of their capacity.

Moreover, if the catchment areas carry on with the insufficient rain, then the civic body might take a decision to increase water cuts from 10 per cent to 15 per cent.

Major areas of Andheri (East) and even parts of Sion Koliwada, Indira Nagar, Kopri Agar and Almeida Compound are suffering due to the water cut. Some in Andheri claim it is more than the 10 per cent declared by the BMC. Meanwhile, a BMC official claimed there might be a local issue for this.

Usually, the lakes start overflowing after the first 10 days of July, however, the rainfall in the catchment areas is not satisfactory this year so far.

According to the BMC lake levels data, there was 34.09 per cent water stock in the seven lakes till Monday morning, July 17. Last year, there was 82.09 per cent water stock at the same time. The total capacity of the lakes is 14.47 lakh million litres. Currently there is 4.93 lakh million litres water stock in the lakes.

As of Sunday, July 16, water stock was 4,70,621million litre, which was 32.52% of the total 14,47,363 million litres. Last year on July 16, the water stock was at 11,38,097 million litres, or 78% of the total stock. This will be sufficient till October, reports stated.

Last year Modak Sagar and Tulsi lake were overflowing by this period. But this year there is only 56.75 per cent water in Modak Sagar and 70.39 per cent water in Tulsi.
