Maharashtra will soon become a “fire-free state”, assures Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday, April 13. This remark came a day ahead of Mumbai Fire Brigade’s (MFB) Fire Service Week, which is observed from April 14 to April 20.

On this occasion, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s MFB will present a breathtaking fire competition drill this year on April 15. MFB strength includes 2388 highly trained brave personnel, 270+ state of art vehicles, most advanced equipment, six regional command centres, 35 fire stations and 19 mini fire stations.

Shinde also applauded mandatory installation of fire evacuation lifts in all new buildings that would have a height of 70 m and above announced by the state energy department.

The energy department’s circular on installing fire evacuation lifts in high-rises is a visionary step. It will make the evacuation process easy and faster for fire-fighters, he expressed.

“Now, we must follow all rules made by the department to ascertain the preparedness to fight fire emergencies. Little consciousness by civilians and infra developers can make Maharashtra a fire-free state,” the CM added.

For those unversed, to commemorate the 71 firemen who died in the Bombay Port fire on April 14, 1944, all government offices and municipal bodies will observe national Fire Service Day on April 14. The entire week will be observed as Fire Service week.
