To prevent incidents from taking place on trains and to keep an eye on every railway station, Western Railways (WR) have installed 2,729 CCTV cameras across all 30 stations from Churchgate to Virar. All the cameras have 4k resolution.

Reportedly, out of these many installed cameras, 450 of them have face-recognition technology. This will help the concerned authorities to identify and trace the culprit who will commit the crime. Around 1,100 cameras were installed earlier on these stations. They are now replaced with new ones.

To strengthen the security and for the safety of commuters, WR has resorted to the latest technological advancements, as per the railway officials.

Aside from the railway premises, they have installed 1,397 CCTV cameras in 48 local trains. In ladies coach, 139 cameras are installed while in the general compartment 58 cameras are installed, said the officials. CCTV will be installed in the remaining ladies coach soon, added the officials.

The cameras also have an infrared intruder alarm system, ensuring 360-degree coverage. It has 24-hours coverage with night vision capability and quickly sends distress calls, SMS, or mail to the security control. This will help in alerting staff for a quick response. The cameras not only have face-recognition technology but can also detect overcrowding, abandoned objects, and trespassing.

As per the new unique initiative by railways, a Unified Command Control Centre (UCCC) would also be there at Mumbai Central, which will deliver facilities for disaster management in Mumbai.
