To improve the security of the railway premises, the state Government Railway Police (GRP) has written a letter to the concerned authorities of Central and Western Railways.

The decision to upgrade the security on the vulnerable railway premises comes after a history-sheeter raped a 14-year old girl at Ulhasnagar railway station in an unused room at railway quarters.

The city police repudiated to register an FIR, following which GRP police had registered a case and arrested the accused.

There are several unused places and sheds along with the railway premises. An official addressing the situation said that drug addicts utilize the unused structures. They steal and sell the iron, which helps them to sponsor their drug addiction.

In the letter, recommendations have been made, such as making sure that there is proper lighting in the area and in desolate places, security personnel is stationed.

GRP had also suggested installing a CCTV camera network in places like skywalks which is usually misused for crimes, especially at night.

Areas like skywalks and parking outside railway stations have always been a matter of dispute by the railway police and city police as their jurisdiction. Both of them claim that these areas do not come under their authority, due to which the complainant has to keep going from one place to another to register the complaint, said an official while addressing the media.

The officer further said that the railways are asked to close the illegal entry points to railway station premises since these areas are narrow roads that are not under CCTV coverage.
