Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in the Assembly that the Municipal Corporation will be given the land of Mafatlal Industries to expand the construction of Jijamata Udyaan (Rani Baug). However, Mafatlal Industries Limited had filed a writ petition against the transfer of the municipal plots last year and responding to this, Bombay High Court had ordered both the BMC and Mafatlal Industries to maintain status quo till the matter of possession of land was fixed.

Now the question is if the High Court has directed a stay order, how is the BMC going to be given the land?

For extension of Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Park and Zoo, 50 per cent of Mafatlal Mill land, i.e. seven acres, was allotted to the Municipal Corporation in January 2017. However, a local corporator brought the fact to notice of the Reform Committee that actually the land is not registered in the name of the Municipal Corporation. In response to this, the administration gave an explanation and said that the court had ordered status quo in the area of Rani Baug, where he was ordered to maintain the situation.

Land no. 593 which is a plot of 58,197 square meters has been reserved for the extension of Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Park and Zoo. But by changing this, only 50 per cent of the net reservation area is reserved for the zoos. The land belongs to the state government and has been leased to Mafatlal Industries Limited. The policy has been decided to provide government land to local government institutions and government departments, boards and corporations.

The next hearing for the case is going to be on April 13.
