Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bowl first against Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday, April 23.

With Rohit Sharma scoring a fighting half-century, Mumbai Indians set a competitive 132-run target for Punjab Kings in Match 17 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. However, KL Rahul and Chris Gayle helped PBKS to a nine-wicket victory.

The defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) did not manage to do well and have lost the third match in a row out of the first 4 matches.

In the tricky 132-chase, Punjab Kings were off to a good start with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal putting up a 50-run stand. After Agarwal departed off a Rahul Chahar delivery in the 8th over, Rahul and Gayle continued to anchor the innings. While Mumbai spinners with some good overs brought the team back to the game, Gayle and Rahul brought up a 50-run stand to take the game away from Mumbai.

Chasing its target, PBKS scored 132 for one in 17.4 overs, winning by nine wickets. Rahul and Chris Gayle formed a match-winning partnership, to help their side to a win. Captain Rahul smashed an unbeaten knock of 60 runs in 52 balls, packed with three fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, Gayle scored 43 in 35 balls, consisting of five fours and two sixes. Rahul Chahar took a wicket for MI, in an otherwise poor showing for their bowlers.

The MI skipper scored 63 runs off 52 balls, with five fours and two sixes. Suryakumar Yadav also made a noteworthy contribution with 33 runs off 27 balls. Mohammed Shami and Ravi Bishnoi were on fire for Punjab, taking two wickets each. Meanwhile, Deepak Hooda and Arshdeep Singh registered a dismissal each.

KL Rahul hit the winning four to help Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeat Mumbai Indians (MI) in today’s match.

The two teams have faced off in 26 matches to date. Mumbai Indians had a slight upper hand against Punjab as they had won 14 matches while Punjab Kings emerged victorious in 12 matches.
