Prerna Sonwane, the young girl at the center of this heart-rending incident, initially complained of a severe headache and vomiting. As her condition worsened, she developed a high fever on the evening of September 16. Fearing for her well-being, her family rushed her to a local doctor situated in Vishnu Nagar, Digha, who promptly administered an injection and prescribed tablets at approximately 7.30 pm. Little did they know that this would be the beginning of a tragic ordeal.

Upon returning home from the doctor's clinic, Prerna's condition took a dire turn. She began experiencing extreme coldness and decided to rest. At around 8.15 pm, her father attempted to administer medication but made a harrowing discovery. Her tongue was trapped between her teeth, and she displayed no signs of movement. Panic set in as they immediately rushed her back to the doctor, who, in a desperate attempt, suggested transferring her to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa. Despite their frantic efforts, Prerna tragically passed away around 10.40 pm while undergoing treatment at Kalwa Hospital.

Family Seeks Justice

Umesh Sakharam Sonwane, the bereaved father of the deceased, swiftly reported the incident to the Rabale MIDC police and filed a complaint against the doctor involved. Dipak Shelke, a police sub-inspector and the investigating officer from Rabale MIDC police, confirmed the registration of an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and stated that a comprehensive investigation is currently underway. Shelke remarked, "The doctor's records are being scrutinized, and a thorough inquiry is being conducted to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident."

Similar Tragedy in Raigad

In another grievous incident reported in July 2023, a 12-year-old girl hailing from Jite village met a similarly unfortunate fate, succumbing to a snakebite. The incident sparked allegations of negligence against government health staff. According to a report in the Times of India, the young girl was rushed to multiple hospitals in Pen, Raigad, but regrettably, she did not receive timely and adequate treatment. Her untimely demise led to local residents in Pen protesting, claiming that the delay in treatment resulted from the unavailability of anti-snake venom (ASV) injections in both government and private hospitals across the district, coupled with a shortage of ambulance services.
