The Mumbai Crime Branch in coordination with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) health officials arrested two men for allegedly practicing illegally, thereby endangering public health and cheating unsuspecting patients.
Mumbai Police Crime Branch’s Unit 6 received credible information that in the Shivajinagar and Govandi area, individuals were running clinics and treating patients without formal medical education or qualifications.
Acting on the tip-off, a police team along with an Assistant Medical Officer from the BMC’s M-East Ward, Deonar, conducted raids at two clinics in Shivajinagar.
The accused, identified as Rajiv Kapildev Rajan (34) and Kuberanath Gomti Yadav (56), were allegedly examining patients and administering treatments, including injections and antibiotics, while charging hefty consultation fees.
Police investigations revealed that both individuals were operating as doctors without any valid medical license and were not registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council.
They allegedly posed as qualified practitioners and provided treatment for various ailments, charging hefty fees from patients.
During the raid, authorities seized a stock of medical supplies, including injection vials, syringes, antibiotic tablets, and other medicines, under a panchnama.
Two separate cases have been registered against the accused at Shivajinagar Police Station under Sections 33 and 36 of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1961. The team was led by Police Inspector Bharat Ghone of Unit 6, along with other officers and staff.
Further investigation is underway.
It is pertinent to note that in March, the Maharashtra government announced plans to form a committee to monitor bogus doctors and unauthorised nursing homes in the state.
The panel will identify individuals practising medicine without proper qualifications and clinics operating without the required permissions.
The government has also stated it plans to amend the existing law to increase penalties for such violations, including stricter fines and longer jail terms for fake doctors and illegally operating hospitals.
