Cases of cyber crime on a rise in Mumbai

In the 21st century, technology has given impetus to our lives. At the same time, it has given birth to new crimes. The worst of this crime is currently reaching the financial capital of the country, Mumbai.

Mumbai ranks second in the number of cybercrime cases reported, according to the latest data revealed by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Bengaluru is at the top spot in this list. 

Mumbai witnessed a steep rise in the cybercrime cases with 2,527 cases being registered in 2019, reported the NCRB. The data further revealed that Mumbai had recorded 1,362 cybercrime cases in 2017 and it had marginally increased to 1,482 in 2018.

According to NCRB, Mumbai had 146 cases of cyber stalking and bullying, 28 data thefts, 154 sexual exploitation cases, 15 cyber blackmailings, 100 credit/debit card frauds, 276 ATM frauds, 248 online banking frauds, 37 OTP frauds and 26 forgery cases.

Moreover, Maharashtra has also recorded a rise in cybercrime compared to 2017 and 2018. Although the cases decreased from 3,604 cases in 2017 to 3,511 in 2018, the number of cybercrime shot up to 4,967 in 2019.

The former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced the Cyber Headquarters at Bandra West for providing a helping hand to the Mumbai Police in view of the increasing number of cybercrime cases. The government had inaugurated cyber labs in 46 places to curb cybercrime in Mumbai. However, no progress has been made on the same over its functioning. 

Apart from that separate cyber cells have been set up in 94 police stations in Mumbai. The graph of cybercrime in Maharashtra has been increasing day by day and the rate of solving the crime is many times less than that.

While the cybercrime is on the rise, the conviction rate for arrests in the fraud is only 25 per cent. However, in the state, the proportion is 18 per cent. Despite the high rate of cybercrime in Uttar Pradesh, the conviction rate is 64 per cent.
