Central Railway nets INR 1.74 crore in fines

Passengers travelling by train are often required to abide by the rules set and not doing so can lead to fines. The Central Railway has started taking strict action against passengers those who violate such rules.

From January to November 2020, a total of 35,417 cases of violation of railway rules by commuters while traveling in the Mumbai section of the Central Railway were reported. Out of the total cases, 107 people were imprisoned for flouting the railway rules.

Many people cross the rail tracks as a mean for the shortcut and not use the pedestrian bridge risking their lives. Such passengers are also prosecuted under the Railway Act. It has come to light that out of the total cases registered, the number of cross-border offences is highest.

Action has also been taken under various offences such as performing stunts, arguing with a ticket inspector or an employee at the ticket window, and causing uncleanliness. A fine of INR 1.74 crores has been recovered till November 2020. Apart from that, there were a lot of theft cases reported. Nearly 206 cases have been registered and the Railway Security Force has succeeded in solving 171 cases. Also, as many as a total of 450 people have been arrested.

In 2020, 369 cases have been registered against unauthorised brokers. In this, 404 brokers were booked, of them, 21 were jailed and fined INR 1.32 lakh. While 138 minors and 91 girls who had fled their homes in the last 11 months were taken into custody, some were handed over to their parents, while others were handed over to social organizations.
