A father is that figure who, no matter what he does, is always his daughter’s hero. But what unfolded after an awareness session in Santacruz caused a withdrawal of that immense amount of trust every daughter has in her heart for her father.

We cannot imagine the plight of an 11-year-old girl being raped by her own father over a stretch of three years. Police arrested this 54-year-old man on Thursday who happens to be a tuition teacher. This man climbed all heights of mercilessness and had been raping his own daughter for the past three years at their Santacruz residence. No one can justify as to what drove this man to commit such atrocities on his own blood.

The girl told the police her father used to rape herby showing her pornographic films whenever her mother left the house. According to the police, the matter came to light a week after the girl told her mother about it. The victim had an awareness session going on in her school as a part of their Police Didi initiative, that might have encouraged her to vocalise her sufferings.

The police has addressed the issue well by booking the accused under several acts under 354 (sexual harassment), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 6 (Aggravated Penetrative Sexual Assault), 10 (Aggravated Sexual Assault) and 12 (Sexual Harassment of the Child) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

We arrested the accused on Monday and took him to the sessions court. He has been remanded in police custody till November 30. He and the victim were also sent for medical test," Shantanu Pawar, Senior Police Inspector.

This story has a valuable lesson to be learned by all young girls who cannot come to verbalise their problems if their relatives are involved in the assault. The voices of such girls are hushed down often by a family member by use of threats. Schools, both primary and secondary sections, should also take a note on the importance of conducting sex education workshops in order to create an awareness among young boys and girls about sexual crimes. We must always remember that crime knows no boundaries, it can be inflicted on you by anyone, also by your own father, like in this case. Just as it is need of the hour to stop stigmatizing sexual crimes, it is extremely important to safeguard our children from the clutches of these monsters in disguise so that they don’t have to bear it all alone in the darkness.
