On Wednesday, December 16, a court in Raigad district took cognizance of a charge-sheet filed against television journalist Arnab Goswami and two others in the abetment of suicide case of interior designer Anvay Naik.

Moreover, the court has asked the Republic TV Editor-in-Chief to appear before it on January 7. As per reports, the court took the cognizance of the charge-sheet, which runs into 1,914 pages, in spite of strong objection put forth by the defence lawyers, especially public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat. A division bench of Justices SS Shinde and MS Karnik accepted the request and directed the magistrates' court to issue a copy of the charge-sheet to Goswami at the earliest. As a result, the court stated that it would hear the matter further in January.

On the other hand, Goswami had earlier filed an application in his pending petition before the Bombay High Court requesting the court to stay any further investigation into the Anvay Naik suicide abetment case registered against him. As per reports, Goswami had also sought an interim order to restrain Alibaug police from issuing a charge sheet in the case and to transfer the investigation to the CBI or some other independent agency beyond the purview of Maharashtra government.

In the past, Mumbai Police reached Editor-In-Chief Arnab Goswami's residence, barged into his room before arresting him in connection with the suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik in 2018. The arrest had reverberated across the country and was strongly condemned by BJP leaders.
