On Wednesday (November 4), Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, was arrested by Mumbai Police. According to the reports, he has been arrested in connection with the death of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik in Alibaug in 2018. Goswami was arrested from his house and is said to be taken to Raigad. He is likely to be interrogated there by the investigating officer and accordingly the further course of action will be decided.

The Alibaug police had registered a case of abetment to suicide in 2018 and it was closed by the Raigad police in 2019. It was alleged that Goswami had abetted suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer and his mother.

However, this year in the month of May, the Maharashtra government ordered a fresh probe into the case. At the time, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in a tweet had said that a fresh probe was ordered after Naik’s daughter Adnya approached him regarding the case. “Adnya Naik had complained to me that Alibaug Police had not investigated non-payment of dues from Arnab Goswami’s Republic, which drove her entrepreneur father and grandmom to suicide in May 2018,” he tweeted. “I’ve ordered a CID re-investigation of the case.”

As per Goswami, he was physically assaulted by Mumbai Police along with his mother-in-law and father-in-law, son and wife.  Republic TV has been flashing visuals that show Goswami being forced into a police van.

Prakash Javadekar, Union Information & Broadcasting Minister took to Twitter to condemn the arrest and termed this as 'attack on freedom of the press'. He said, "We condemn the attack on press freedom in Maharashtra. This is not the way to treat the Press. This reminds us of the emergency days when the press was treated like this".

In response, Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut in conversation with news agency said, "The law is followed in Maharashtra. Police can take action if they have evidence against anyone. Since the formation of Thackeray government, no action has been taken against anyone for revenge",
