Nearly 7,000 Ola users who were overcharged in Mumbai due to a manipulation of the app by the drivers will now reportedly get their refunds. The Mumbai Police Crime Branch investigated the case and said that Ola has so far returned around ₹1.5 lakh to more than 1,200 users while the process of refunding other users is reportedly underway.

The city’s Crime Branch arrested three Ola drivers on November 1, 2020, who were accused of manipulating the Ola app. The culprits said that they would switch off the Ola app and restart it below flyovers. A glitch in the app would then fool users into paying more than their actual fare.

An officer belonging to Crime Branch (Unit 1) said that a database of around 7,000 Ola users was formed with the suspicion that they may have been victims of this scam. “Accordingly, the amount charged extra has been refunded to customers using the app. Refunds have been made through UPI as well where payments were made via that platform. Those who had paid in cash are being contacted by the company for refund,” the officer further explained.

Previously, Mumbai Police filed a charge sheet against the aforementioned three drivers while mentioning that 33 additional drivers were also involved in this scam. It is reported that the drivers failed to update the Ola app so as to stay on the version containing the glitch that overcharged customers.

The charge sheet went on to say that one of the arrested former Ola drivers, Rajesh Acharya, was the first to spot the glitch and misuse it for financial gain. He then shared the information with other drivers while also charging them a fee for providing the older version of the app.
