Mumbai Traffic Police to Survey and Possibly Fix Parking Trouble Faced by Residential Societies

Housing societies in Mumbai routinely face trouble with parking. Since most complexes and residential units were built decades ago, they lack adequate parking spots. This leaves residents with no option but to park their vehicles on the streets.

To add to the residents’ concerns, traffic police also takes action against such vehicles. However, this could be changing soon, as the traffic police are now conducting surveys of societies with an aim to create space for parking outside.

Some societies in the city wrote to the traffic department after having their vehicles seized or prosecuted for parking on the road. It is now learnt that in some cases, the department may visit the residential colonies to sort out parking issues for residents. It is further said that if and when a new parking area is created, only the residents will be allowed to park there.

“This building is around 100 years old and due to lack of parking space, people park on the roads. The building committee has written several letters to the traffic police in this matter. We have requested the traffic police to provide parking facilities to the people,” a resident of Round Building near Saat Rasta said.

The survey conducted by the traffic police will take a variety of factors into consideration including the road width while also determining whether the roads near the building are one-way or two-way. Officials have reportedly not discussed the fee that could be charged for parking.

As per data provided by Mumbai Traffic Police, officials have issued 20,556 e-challans against motorcycles and 25,403 of them against four-wheelers for parking violations between December 1, 2020, to January 27, 2021.

Officials went on to say that there are roughly 80 street parking spaces and 50 public parking lots in Mumbai and that only 5 per cent of them use it.

“The traffic police is taking action against illegal parking on the roads of Mumbai. But some people have written to us saying their society does not have parking space. We will survey such societies whose residents write to us about this issue and try to resolve it,” Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic) Yashasvi Yadav said.
