The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans to construct three vehicular underpasses while also widening the flyover near the domestic terminal or T1 junction of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. This is expected to ease traffic congestion on the Western Express Highway (WEH) which is situated near the airport.

Officials added that the WEH stretch between the Andheri flyover and the domestic airport flyover sees heavy traffic congestion during morning and evening peak hours.

Metropolitan Commissioner of the MMRDA, R A Rajeev said, “There was a need for the project because traffic at T1 and T2 during peak hour is more than 10,000 PCU (cars), hence intersection is needed at such locations as per Indian Road Congress. Once the project is complete, it will decongest the traffic on WEH, especially near T1 and T2.”

Meanwhile, for the vehicles that are headed from T2 towards Dahisar, an official said that they have recommended the construction of a 1.035-kilometre underpass. This underpass will reportedly have a width of 10.25 meters.

Additionally, vehicles heading towards Bandra will have a 505-meter long and 10.25 meters wide underpass. Lastly, the third underpass will take people coming from Bandra towards T1. These projects will reportedly cost the MMRDA ₹151 crores.

The MMRDA had sought the services of American firm Louis Berger Consulting to provide suggestions to improve the movement of traffic on WEH. The upgrade to the flyover and the new underpasses were recommended by the firm, MMRDA officials said.
