The police official elaborated on how Shahrukh Sheikh was apprehended by Damu Nagar's residents nearly 10 days ago when he went into the area to check on his auto that was parked there.

A police official said on Monday, January 24 that an auto driver (32) succumbed allegedly to injuries caused by a mob in Mumbai's Malad on the suspicion that he was a thief, reported news agency PTI. In the aftermath of this incident, his family took out a protest march and demanded that action be taken against those involved in the incident.

According to the report, the police official elaborated on how Shahrukh Sheikh was apprehended by Damu Nagar's residents nearly 10 days ago when he went into the area to check on his auto that was parked there. It has been alleged that the mob began hitting him claiming that he could be a thief.

The official further remarked that the mob then dumped him in an isolated place nearby. He added that some passerby's alerted the authorities and he was brought to the police station where he was booked in a robbery case. 

While the man secured bail in two days, he succumbed while undergoing treatment which has alleged to be from the injuries sustained in the mob assault. The man's family is reportedly demanding that the police check the CCTV footage to nab those who beat him.

Based on the account, Sheikh's family took out a protest match to the office of the Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region) on Sunday, January 23. They claimed that those involved were political party workers and that the investigation was stuck owing to pressure from local politicians. 

The report quoted Senior Inspector Anandrao Haake of the Samata Nagar police station who elucidated on how they booked Sheikh for robbery as well as charged seven to eight people with rioting on the complaint of his family.

Haake added that they are awaiting post mortem reports to proceed with the investigation. However, he mentioned that no injury marks were found on Sheikh's body.
