A lower court in Mumbai has rejected the bail application of dietitian and health coach Megha Rawal, who was arrested in connection with the death of an eight-year-old boy in a road accident in Bandra West.
Rawal was arrested after her car allegedly hit Ansh Gupta, a Class III student, while he was crossing the road near Jijamata Garden in Bandra last week. The child sustained serious injuries and was taken to Holy Family Hospital, where he died during treatment, police said.
The police have alleged that Rawal was driving at high speed and talking on her mobile phone when the accident occurred. Statements recorded during the investigation allegedly support the claim that she was using her phone and driving at speed.
Rawal denied the allegations in her bail plea. She said she did not use her mobile phone while driving and had used it only after the accident to inform her husband. She also said that call data records and her phone could be examined to establish her claim.
Rawal further described the incident as an unfortunate and unintentional accident. According to her plea, the boy suddenly came in front of the vehicle while crossing the road, leaving her with no sufficient time to assess the situation or avoid the collision. She also denied allegations that she was driving recklessly or negligently.
The police opposed the bail application, arguing that the case was serious and the investigation was still in progress. They claimed that witnesses had told investigators that Rawal was speaking on the phone and driving at high speed when the vehicle hit the child.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected Rawal’s bail plea.
The accident occurred near Jijamata Garden in Bandra West and resulted in the death of Ansh Gupta, 8, who was the only child of his family, police said.
