Bombay High Court asks media to restrain with reports regarding Sushant Rajput case

Eight retired police officers of the Maharashtra Police have filed a petition in the Mumbai High Court alleging that the Mumbai Police is being defamed by deliberately showing false, misleading and baseless news against the department.

Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput passed away on June 14, 2020. His body was found hanging at his apartment in Mumbai, and ever since his death, fans and family members have demanded justice and investigation into the matter. Recently, the Supreme Court asked the CBI to investigate the matter, however, several media reports have share irrelevant information, which has been affecting the investigation.

Observing this, the Bombay High Court, on Thursday, August 3, 2020, informed that the media to exercise restraint while reporting on the ongoing probe into his death, and has directed the news channels and publications not to affect the investigation in any way.

As per developments, eight retired police officers of the Maharashtra Police have filed a petition in the Mumbai High Court alleging that the Mumbai Police is being defamed by deliberately showing false, misleading and baseless news against the department. Observing this, the officials have asked the court to stop the news channels from broadcasting such false and baseless news.

Among the petitioners is former state director general of police MSN Singh, PS Pasricha, DK Shivanandan, Sanjeev Dayal, Satish Mathur and K Subramaniam, former Mumbai Police Commissioner DN Jadhav and former additional Director General of Police KP Raghuvanshi.

During the hearing on the petition, the High Court requested the media to exercise restraint in covering the ongoing probe thereby not affecting the investigation in any way. The court also directed the CBI to clarify its position on the matter. 

Three lawyers have alleged that a media trial is being held in the Sushant Singh case. Both the petitions will be heard next week.

Two months have passed since the actor passed away, yet details regarding his death have not come to the forefront., and as per recent directives, the case was handed over to the CBI. However, questions regarding Mumbai Police's investigation were being raised from the very beginning, and over the last few months, some media houses have been raising questions about the functioning of the Mumbai Police at all levels.
