The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday, October 30, seized 166.25 kg illegal firecrackers amid the Diwali festivities.
Last week, the BMC’s license department had initiated crackdown on illegal fire crackers in Mumbai. In this initiative, the civic body seized a total of 229.5 kg illegal firecrackers from October 25.
Of the total, 43 kg were seized from K/West (Andheri, Juhu, Versova) wards, 22 kg from G/South (Worli, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi) areas and 18 kg from L (Kurla) ward, the BMC data revealed.
Meanwhile, no illegal firecrackers were seized from M/East (Govandi, Mankhurd), N (Ghatkopar), P/North (Malad), G/North (Dadar, Mahim), C (Kalbadevi) and A (Fort, Nariman Point, Marine Drive) wards.
It is pertinent to note that the BMC had issued a notification on selling and bursting of firecrackers this year.
An official stated that the BMC’s guidelines mandate having a specific licence for selling fire crackers along with an NOC from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB). The entities booked were selling the crackers without these documents and the crackers sold by them were also procured by illegal means.
The BMC officials maintained that the drive for seizing firecrackers will continue during the festive season.
Additionally, the Mumbai Police have announced a ban on selling, storing, and flying sky lanterns during Diwali as a safety precaution. The ban will be in effect till November 21, 2024.
