The Brihanmumba Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) K/West ward’s contract labourer committed suicide by hanging herself after which enraged members of Kachra Vahtuk Shramik Sangh kept her dead body in front of the BMC headquarters and started a protest.

28-year-old Sumati Devendra used to work as a contract labourer in K/West ward. For the past few days, despite protection, these workers were not been given any work. 



Discrepancies in salaries

According to the to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, these labourers should get ₹15,000 to ₹22,000 salary but in reality, they are paid only ₹6,000 to ₹8,000. Due to this, deceased Sumati was in financial crisis who decided to end her life, alleged Kachra Vahtuk Sangh.

We have asked the commissioner to take action against the officer because of whom she committed suicide. We have also asked her kin to get a job in the BMC.”

The Sangh also accused the civic body of ignoring the problems of the contract labourers and threaten to carry out a protest. Along with this, they are also planning to organise bhik maango andolan. The deceased woman has a salary of ₹1,00,000 pending with BMC.
