Cybercrime cases in the city of Mumbai and nearby Metropolitan regions areas on the rise, and keeping the same in mind, the state government of Maharashtra had decided to set up independent cyber police stations in the city. The same was announced a few years ago and the government, on January 26, 2021, inaugurated the same.

As per reports, these cyber police stations will help the government curb the respective cases and now there will not be a need to go to the cyber police station in BKC to register a complaint. Earlier, the Cyber Police unit in the city was facing several concerns, and the planning which was done over the last several years has become reality today.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on the Republic Day 2021,  inaugurated five new cyber police stations in Mumbai, whereby cases of fraud ranging from INR 2 lakh to INR 50 lakh will be registered. In particular, 50 per cent of the manpower in these police stations will be women and preference will be given to police with knowledge of cyber laws, experience in solving crimes and ones who are trained about the digital world.

Earlier, the police as well as the complainants had to rely on the Cyber Police Station at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) of the Crime Branch for investigation, as well as technical assistance. The authorities, however, realised the necessity to have new cyber police stations with expert teams. After years of work, these cyber police stations are now operational and will be run by a local deputy commissioner of police and a senior police inspector.

One can visit these stations in case of emergency

  • Samata Nagar Police at Kandivali in Mumbai North Division
  • Worli Police in Mumbai Central Division

These police stations have been built with up-to-date equipment. In addition, five senior police inspectors, 20 police inspectors, 30 assistant police inspectors, 50 police sub-inspectors, 200 police constables and a large number of well-trained police personnel would be provided to ensure the operations are not affected.
