Nearly 150 members of Tablighi Jamaat who attended the religious congregation at Delhi’s Nizamuddin Markaz were booked for negligence by Mumbai Police. Given the increasing cases for the coronavirus or COVID-19, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) along with Mumbai Police warned of strict action against those who fail to reveal their travel history in relation to the Tablighi Jamaat incident.

The Azad Maidan Police registered the offences against 150 Tablighi Jamaat members on the basis of a complaint filed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

The BMC and Mumbai Police had asked the Tablighi Jamaat members - those who visited Mumbai after participating in the religious gathering at Delhi’s Nizamuddin Markaz - to come forward and identify themselves in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus or COVID-19.

“We request all attendees of Tablighi Markaz at Nizamuddin, New Delhi to report their travel details on @mybmc helpline 1916 and help us in our fight against this pandemic,” Mumbai Police said in a tweet.

Nearly 9,000 people including some people who came from abroad were gathered on March 13 at Tablighi Jamaat headquarter in Delhi’s Nizamuddin West. However, the Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi is being held responsible for spiking the number of COVID-19 cases in India.

Since many people who attended the event in Delhi have been tested positive for the coronavirus, it is being seen as a prime catalyst of the virus spread across several stated in India.
