There was a huge decline in the crime rate across Mumbai during the lockdown period. However, now with the things opening up even the crime rate in the city is increasing at an alarming rate.

As per records, from merely 94 cases registered across the city in April, they rose to 314 in August across the city. In April, the 94 police stations across Mumbai did not report a single case of chain snatching, which has perennially been a headache for the police. In May, only 117 cases were registered in the city but they doubled next month as 248 cases were reported in June. Most of the offences were thefts, motor vehicle thefts and burglaries.

According to data available by Navi Mumbai police, in comparison to the last year records in July, the crime cases reported has come down by almost 50 per cent. While the total number of crimes during July 2020 was 282 and it was 489 in July 2019.

In order to arrest this, Mumbai Police has instructed all the shopkeepers across the city to install CCTV cameras in their shops.

In the past, more than 6,000 cameras have been installed in the city for security purpose. As per police, if CCTV cameras are installed in all shops it will become easier to identify the culprits.

Apart from theft, crimes such as chain snatching, assault, rape cases can also be curtailed. Even the number of cheating cases or frauds has seen a rise.

When it came to crime against women, statistics show that 89 cases were registered in April as compared to 559 in February. Of the cases registered in April, 17 were rape cases and in 12 of these cases, the victim was a minor.
