Death Toll in Mumbai Police due to COVID-19 reaches 14

The tally of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai Police is 1,266 whereas 14 policemen have succumbed to the deadly infection.

On Thursday, a 52-year-old head constable attached to Malvani Police Station succumbed to COVID-19. With the constable's death, the death toll in Mumbai Police force has climbed to 14. Jagdish Pote, the deceased policeman, was on leave since May 20 and had tested positive early on Thursday. His wife also had tested positive along with him.

As per the police, the deceased was a Kandivli resident and had been on leave since May 20 after he fell sick. Following which, he was admitted to Shivam Hospital. However, his health kept deteriorating and also developed COVID symptoms. Pote along with his family then underwent testing at Sir JJ Hospital.

After his diagnosis, he was immediately shifted to Malad Hospital, but, at around 3:00 pm, Pote succumbed to coronavirus. His wife is still undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

As per the senior inspector at Malvani Police station, Pote had no co-morbidities and it is suspected that he might have contracted the virus while on patrol duty in containment zones. Pote's death comes as a second blow to the Mumbai Police force in two days as on Wednesday, a 55-year-old constable posted at Dadar police station succumbed to COVID-19 after testing positive last week.

As of May 28, the number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra Police force had risen to 2,095 whereas the death toll for state police stands at 22. Among which, 897 policemen have successfully recovered from the infection and have been discharged. More than 60 per cent of cases in the state police have been reported in Mumbai Police force. The tally of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai Police is 1,266 whereas 14 policemen have succumbed to the deadly infection. Alongside, over 400 policemen in Mumbai Police have recovered from coronavirus.

Update:

In the last 24 hours, 116 police personnel tested positive for COVID-19 in Maharashtra and 3 personnel succumbed to the virus. This has taken the tally of COVID-19 personnel to 2,211 in the state and 25 policemen have died so far.
