51 policemen succumb to coronavirus infection in Maharashtra

The number of coronavirus cases in the city of Mumbai has been increasing over the last few months and as directed by the state government, the cities have been under the lockdown for over 3 months now. However, only essential services are allowed to function. 

The state government the local municipality and the Mumbai Police have been working hard to ensure safety for the citizens, with an aim to contain the spread of coronavirus. However, as per reports, 51 policemen have died due to the coronavirus infection. On the other hand, 998 policemen are still fighting the viral infection. 

The highest number of deaths, in the state, are recorded with the Mumbai police force. During the lockdown, the police were deployed across the city to protect the people from coronavirus pandemic and the infection spread among the force as they came in contact with some COVID-19 patients.

In the recently reported incident, a 56-year-old Police Inspector from the Marine Drive police station passed away due to coronavirus infection. Observing this, the Commissioner of Police has instructed all officers above the age of 55 years to stay at home as the infection could prove to be dangerous for the elderly.

The policeman who recently passed away was at home. However, his condition deteriorated two weeks back after which he was hospitalized for treatment, where he tested positive for coronavirus. He was admitted at Bandra's Guru Nanak Hospital. His condition worsened thereafter and he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit, where the doctors placed him on a ventilator because he was having trouble breathing. Unfortunately, he passed away late on Tuesday.

The police officer was a resident of the Naigaon police colony and he survived with his wife, three daughters and a son. 

So far, around 2,510 policemen have been infected with the coronavirus and 1,785 have recovered. Reports across Maharashtra show that more than 4,000 policemen have tested positive for coronavirus and a majority of them have recovered. However, a thousand policemen are undergoing treatment.
