47-year-old LIC agent, Pradeep Raut, died at J J Hospital during treatment and his relatives are blaming police officials of Kanjurmarg police station for his death. According to them, Raut was beaten black and blue which led to the gangrene and was denied health care.

Jay, a son, has filed a complaint with police commissioner against Kanjurmarg police officials who said to have tortured Raut while he was in their custody.

What's the story?

Pradeep was a Bhandup resident and was an auto-rickshaw driver in 1996. As he was the only earning member of his family, he started working as an LIC agent. After few days, in order to expand his business, he asked his wife Pranali and his son Jay Raut to join him in his business.

Apart from this, he also worked as an investor wherein he used to give good returns. Likewise, he used to invest for few of the investors but at one point of the time, he stopped giving returns. He used the same money and invested in six flats. This infuriated the investors who then filed a complainant against Raut at Kanjurmarg and Bhandup police station.

For further investigation, police booked Pradeep’s wife and son as co-accused. However, both his wife and son managed to get a pre-arrest bail. Bhandup police then arrested Pradeep but handed him over to Kanjurmarg police after the latter asked for his police custody.

Meanwhile, due to severe beatings, Raut’s legs were damaged. He was then shifted to Thane’s Central Jail where his injury got worse. His family requested to shift him to Thane’s Civil Hospital but the doctors demanded the bribe worth ₹10,000. However, until then, his injury which had turned into a severe wound got worse. He was then shifted to Thane’s Civil Hospital where doctors declared that he was infected with gangrene. A surgery was carried out where his fingers were first amputated but it didn’t help. Later, the doctors had to amputate his leg as well. At the same time, he was shifted to J J Hospital but he died during treatment on April 24, 2018.

He was badly beaten and police did not take him to the hospital due to which he contracted gangrene. He was a diabetic patient as well. When we got to know that his leg had to be amputated on April 18, we met our father. He told us that he was badly beaten and police also demanded the bribe of Rs. 5 lakh. Police also told him that if he fails to give money then they would arrest my mother and me,” Jay Raut, son.
