Mohan Delkar, a seven-time Lok Sabha MP from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, has died, allegedly by suicide, police said on Monday, February 22.
The body of the 58-year-old leader was found from a hotel in South Mumbai and has been sent for a postmortem. Mohan Delkar, who was staying in a sea-facing room on the fifth floor of the Sea Green Hotel, allegedly hanged himself.
The police said a suicide note had been found. Police sources said that he has named some people in the suicide note. However, the police have not shared details with the media, saying it is an ongoing investigation.
Though, it is not yet clear as to why the lawmaker had come to Mumbai.
The body was taken to JJ Hospital for postmortem while several senior police officials including Joint Commissioner of Police, Law & Order, Vishwas Nangre Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police, South Region, Satyanarayan Chaudhary, reached the hotel where Delkar allegedly died by suicide. Police officials from Marine Drive were questioning the hotel staff to get details about Delkar and his stay at the hotel. Further investigation into his death is underway, police said.
Who is Mohan Delkar?
The MP was born in December 1962 in Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Delkar is survived by his wife and two children.
Mohan Sanjibhai Delkar was an Independent Member of Parliament. Mohan Delkar had left the Congress ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
Last year, Mohan Delkar had tied up with the JDU for the local election in Dadra and Nagar Haveli after a meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. His support to the JDU resulted in a loss of seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the local polls in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
