There's been some development in the Dr. Payal Tadvi suicide case as Mumbai Sessions Court has extended the judicial custody of the three accused till June 24. Alongside, the hearing for the accused doctors' bail application has been adjourned till June 17.
Dr. Payal Tadvi, a 26-year-old postgraduate student at BYL Nair Hospital committed suicide after her seniors Dr. Hema Ahuja, Dr. Bhakti Mehar and Dr. Ankita Khandelwal allegedly harassed her with casteist remarks. Accordingly, the accused were produced before the court after their judicial custody ended.
After which, the court extended their custody for 14 days. During the hearing, the accused broke down and requested the court to not send them to jail as they had done nothing wrong and it was injustice against them.
Earlier, the government had appointed a panel that had presented a report stating that Dr. Tadvi had been ragged but the panel did not confirm about the casteist remarks being made. The report further added that Nair Hospital had completely failed to handle the issue as the head of the gynaecology and obstetrics department had received complaints about the harassment Tadvi was facing but had not taken any action.
