In the latest series of raids, the Enforcement Directorate on Friday, June 25, conducted searches at the premises of NCP leader and former Maharashtra Home minister Anil Deshmukh in Nagpur and Mumbai.

According to officials, raids are being carried out under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The ED team was questioning Deshmukh’s sons, Sahil, Rishi, and his wife, Aarti, on their transactions, said sources.

Soon after the raids began, the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi allies - Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress - hit out at the Centre and the Bharatiya Janata Party for "misusing central probe agencies" to hound opposition parties.

The ED, which last month raided the premises of some businessmen known to be close to Deshmukh in Nagpur, is investigating allegations of money laundering against him.

This may be recalled that Anil Deshmukh was forced to resign from the post of Maharashtra Home Minister after former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray levelling allegations of corruption against Deshmukh.

Earlier on April 24, the central probe agency had raided around 10 locations of 71-year-old Deshmukh in multiple cities. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader was also detained for several hours after he was booked.
