The case of illegal sending of nearly 35 thousand students to Canada and America has come to light. In this case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at eight locations in Mumbai, Nagpur, Gandhinagar and Vadodara in connection with the ongoing investigation against Bhavesh Ashokbhai Patel and others (Dingucha case). The accused are suspected to have entered into an agreement to get students admitted to foreign institutions through two institutions in Mumbai and Nagpur. 19 lakh rupees in his bank account were frozen in this action. Suspicious documents and digital devices were also seized along with two motor vehicles.

Two institutes in Mumbai and Nagpur have tied up with an institute on commission basis to get students admitted in foreign universities. Students who wish to legally immigrate to the US contact them. In the raids, it was found out that one of the institutes has sent 25,000 students every year and another has sent more than 10,000 students to foreign colleges. Apart from that, about 1700 brokers in Gujarat and 3500 brokers across the country are associated with them, of which 800 are active, and about 112 colleges in Canada have signed an agreement with one organisation, while more than 150 have signed an agreement with another. ED is investigating the involvement of these organisations in this case. The information was given by the ED that they conducted raids in this matter on 10 December and 19 December.

What is the case?

A family from Gujarat was found dead at the Canada-US border on January 19, 2022. The four, from Dingucha village in Gujarat, were illegally deported to the US. Gujarat Police had registered a case against Ashokbhai Patel and others in this matter. ED is investigating the case based on those crimes. It was found that the accused cheated by taking INR 55 to 60 lakh per person by luring them to send it to America.

How does human trafficking happen?

In order to be sent to the US, the accused brokers would first enroll in Canadian colleges or universities in the name of students. They were then sent to Canada on student visas. Once there, the illegals would be sent across the US-Canada border into the US. Due to non-participation in colleges and universities, the fees of these students were refunded. This is how the gang worked. But the concerned persons reached the US illegally.
