Complaints about missing bikes and thefts from western suburbs of Mumbai were reported recently by many citizens at the Dindoshi Police station. Following these, the officials began an investigation and learned that four 20-year-old students from a college in Mumbai have been stealing bikes in the night and the same were being used to impress girls.

Police learned the same after one of their friends informed them about the men riding these bikes near the college. Post the search operation, four boys - Ganesh Chavan, Mahesh Swami, Sandeep Gaikwad, and Yogesh Sakare – were held by the officials, who informed that they used YouTube to learn about starting a bike without the key.

Moreover, before stealing the bikes, they practiced the same on other two-wheeler vehicles owned by parents and neighbours, post which they lied to them about night studies and began stealing these bikes from non-crowded areas. As per reports, the stole the first bike in Malad West, in April 2021.

A report regarding the same was published in the Hindustan Times, which quoted the investigating officer, PSI Dr Chandrakant, who said, “They would take the bikes to their college to impress girls. “Whenever they would come near a check post, they would get down the bikes and pretend to push it, as if taking it to a garage. The boys used to then change the number plate of the vehicle and abandon it as soon as the fuel tanks got empty.”

Further investigations are underway.
