The Mumbai Police has booked a 16-year-old girl for murder after she was found to have thrown her newborn child from the bathroom of her second-floor apartment.

The girl lives in the apartment with her family and reportedly hid the pregnancy from them due to fear of persecution. The girl’s 25-year-old boyfriend was charged with rape under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The teenager reportedly induced the delivery and decided to throw the child from the bathroom. The police said that this incident occurred at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, August 3. The baby was found in the building’s ducts by residents who then notified the police. While the infant was rushed to the hospital, doctors declared the child dead on arrival.

The girl denied the accusations during initial investigations and was eventually taken to a gynaecologist.

Speaking to mid-day, Sub Inspector Abhijeet Tailor from the Virar Police station said, “We checked all CCTV cameras but we didn’t find anything, so were (sic) sure that it was someone from the society who had committed the crime. While checking the duct area windows, we found bloodstains on the second-floor grille.”

“When we checked the house, we found some bloodstains on the commode and we finally confirmed that the infant was delivered at this flat,” the sub-inspector elaborated.

“Later, we took the girl into custody and discovered that she had a boyfriend. We brought him, too, to the police station. During interrogation, the girl finally revealed the truth. She said she had hidden her pregnancy from her parents by wearing loose clothes. We are interrogating her boyfriend,” Tailor added.
