In a case of serious negligence, a total of 12 children in a village in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra were given sanitiser drops instead of polio drops. Official information regarding this incident was reported on Monday, February 1, 2021, whereby a district official said the affected children have been admitted to a government hospital for treatment.

Reports state that their condition is stable. All the children were under five years of age, and officials will be taking strict action against three health workers for such a heinous crime.

The official said that the incident took place at Bhanbora Primary Health Center in Kapasikopari village where the National Pulse Polio Vaccination Program was being run for children aged one to five years.

 Shrikrishna Panchal, head of Yavatmal Zilla Parishad, informed that 12 children under the age of five were given two drops of sanitiser instead of polio drops, post which the children complained of vomiting and restlessness. Adding more he confirmed that the children were later admitted to the hospital, whereby they are being monitored under a team of doctors.

According to the initial information, a doctor, an Anganwadi worker and an Asha worker were present at the primary health centre at the time of the incident. An investigation has been started and all the three health workers will be suspended on an immediate basis.
