The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized over 10 kg of gold in two operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Four people including a woman have been arrested in this case. The value of the seized gold is INR 6.25 cr.


The DRI had laid a trap at the Mumbai airport on Saturday based on the information received about gold smuggling from Gulf countries. Accordingly, a couple who entered Mumbai airport from Sharjah was detained. They have been identified as Mohammad Umar Moh Haroon Fazalwala and Fahim Salim Warewaria. Both are residents of Surat, Gujarat. During the inspection, they found around eight kg of gold worth INR 4.94 cr. Based on the information received from their investigation, the DRI arrested Mudassar Ayub Dojki. After it was found that he helped the accused in the crimes, he was also arrested in this case.

Mudassar is a resident of Jamnagar, Gujarat. Both Fazalwala and Warewara went to Sharjah on June 1. Both of them had brought gold from there. Gang involvement is suspected in this case.


Based on the information received in the second operation, the couple from Dubai was stopped at the Mumbai airport. Of the couple, Afzal Abubakar Wallah was found with about two kilos of gold. Gold was hidden in 56 women's bags. It was seized and Afzal was arrested by the DRI after registering a case against him under the Customs Act. The value of the gold seized from the accused is INR 1.23 cr. The DRI is investigating the matter. There has been an increase in gold smuggling in Mumbai in the last few months.
