A 28-year-old man has been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to murder his girlfriend at Bandstand in Bandra, Mumbai. The accused, identified as Aakash Mukherjea, subjected his girlfriend (28), Lubna Javed Sukte, to a horrifying ordeal that involved drowning, strangulation, and violent assault.

The incident took place during their Mumbai darshan, including the iconic Gateway of India and Girgaon Chowpatty. Mukherjea reportedly revealed to Sukte that he had converted to Islam and expressed his intention to marry her. He even mentioned his plan to seek permission from her aunt, showcasing his conversion certificate. However, the situation took a turn when Sukte asked him to go back to her home at around 10 pm.

According to her FIR statement, Mukherjea's behaviour changed. He forcefully insisted on engaging in a sexual encounter and began threatening her. Overwhelmed and in tears, Sukte resisted. Mukherjea proceeded to gag her and attempted to strangle her when she screamed for help.

Further, he dragged Sukte by her hair and repeatedly slammed her head against the ground. In an attempt to silence her, he even tried to drown her in a nearby gutter. However, locals from nearby intervened immediately.

The locals confronted Mukherjea, who fabricated a false story. He claimed that she had fallen on the rocks multiple times. However, Sukte was able to tell the truth. It prompted the locals to take action. They held Mukherjea before he could escape towards the sea.

With the assistance of the locals, Sukte was taken to Bhabha Hospital in an auto-rickshaw. She suffered from significant bleeding and sustained injuries to her eyes and nose. Her condition is currently reported as stable.

DCP zone-9 Krishnakant Upadhyay confirmed the arrest of Aakash Mukherjea on suspicion of attempted murder. The police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident.
