A 19 year old girl was allegedly beaten up by her in-laws who reportedly tried to kill her by making her drink cleaning liquid (phenyl). A case has been registered against the in laws, who are now absconding.
Police say this could be an instance of abuse for failing to bring in enough dowry. This incident took place on Tuesday at the victim's Navghar Road residence. The woman is now recuperating at Shatabdi hospital.
Police say the victim was speaking on the phone with her mother when her mother in law started beating her. She was then joined by father in law, sister in law and brother in law. After beating her up, they forced her to drink the phenyl. Meanwhile, the victim's mother heard the voices on the phone and reached her marital home. A case has been registered against the in laws under sections 498 A, 354, 328 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
The 19 year old was married to Anil Tiwari on 28 April 2016, but had been suffering abuse for not bringing in enough dowry ever since. She has alleged that she was not only tortured for more dowry, but was also molested by her brother in law.
