The number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra has crossed the 30,000-mark as of Monday, May 18. Among the 33,053 cases in the state 1,273 are Maharashtra Police personnel who have been patrolling the streets of Maharashtra amid the COVID-19 lockdown. So far, 11 policemen have lost their lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per the figures shared by Maharashtra Police headquarters, among the 1,273 cases, 131 are officers whereas, 1,142 are constables. However, a total of 291 policemen, including 34 officers and 257 constables have recovered from the infection. As per the data, a majority of the policemen were local personnel from Mumbai, Thane and Malegaon or personnel of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) who were deployed in these high-risk zones and later returned to their home units.

Of the 384 SRPF personnel who tested positive, most of them were deployed in Mumbai and Malegaon and currently, returned to their unit’s headquarters in Hingoli, Aurangabad and Jalna.

According to reports, the Maharashtra Police has deployed around 23,000 police personnel, aged between 50 and 55, for low-risk police station tasks whereas around 12,000 policemen who are above the age of 55, have been asked to stay home.

Despite taking precautions, there has been a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases among the Maharashtra Police officials. On May 2, the count was 342 and on May 8 it reached 618. It crossed 1000-mark on May 14. Meanwhile, the 11 cops who have succumbed to the disease till now include one officer and 10 constables.

The police officials are currently carrying out an analysis to find out how such a large number of police have tested positive until now.
