Another witness in the case related to the 2008 Malegaon blasts was declared hostile by a special court on Tuesday. The main accused in the case Lt. Colonel Prasad Purohit had appointed the the witness to provide confidential information. However, the number of hostile witnesses in the case has increased to 30 as this witness has recanted his testimony.

This witness had recorded his statement in 2008 to the state's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which was investigating the case at the time. However, during Thursday's hearing before the special court, the witness identified Purohit but told the court that he did not remember recording his statement with the ATS. Subsequently, the NIA, which is currently investigating the case, requested the special court to declare the witness exonerated. After that this witness was declared hostile.

The priest and this witness had met through an acquaintance. The witness had said while recording his statement that they were in constant contact after that. Moreover, Purohit entrusted him with the responsibility of providing confidential information to military officers. It is the claim of the investigating agency that he had also given his identity card in the statement. Purohit had also told us that he was working on spreading Hindutva ideology and setting up an organisation on that line. We also attended the meeting of the Abhinav Bharat organisation in Pune. According to the investigating agency, this witness has claimed that other accused in the case also participated in this meeting.
