Mumbai Police arrested a man from Ahmedabad for allegedly threatening Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi on Twitter. The accused has been sent to a police custody till July 10, 2018.  

Accused Girish Maheshwar had allegedly sent rape threats to Priyanka Chaturvedi’s minor daughter on Twitter. On Monday, a case was filed against an unidentified person who used the Twitter handle @GirishK1605 for threatening Chaturvedi.

DCP Deepak Deoraj said that Goregaon police has registered an offence under section 509 (word, a gesture intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC as well as relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Chaturvedi said that the accused had a picture of Lord Ram as his display picture, yet he made derogatory remarks.

This Is What Happened

The accused had allegedly threatened to harm Chaturvedi’s 10-year-old daughter on the Twitter. Following an outrage, the tweet was brought down. Later, the Union Ministry ordered Mumbai Police to take stern action against the accused. Along with Mumbai Police, the Delhi Police had also filed an FIR when Chaturvedi filed the complaint.
