Mumbai: Surge in people applying for liquor licenses

People in Mumbai have been applying for liquor licences amidst the pandemic in the city so that they can obtain alcohol online during an unforeseeable lockdown.

The government has now permitted the sale of home-made liquor. However, when ordering online, you need a license. Currently, the Bombay Prohibition Act is applicable for the production, sale and consumption of alcohol in Maharashtra. This has been implemented by the Maharashtra State Excise Department. As a result, people across the state have applied for a liquor license.

As of now, the vendors are allowed to deliver alcohol at an individual's home. However, only liquor dealers who have a license under the Mumbai Foreign Liquor Rules, 1953, can deliver liquor under the conditions imposed by the government. From April 1 to September 18, 1,56,085 people had applied to the state excise department for a liquor license. Out of which 1,50,955 people have been allowed. As of September 20, 4,590 people in the state have availed the home brewing service.

The state-of-the-art liquor sales scheme was implemented in the state from May 15. Even though alcohol consumption licenses are available on the state excise website, it has been pointed out that there are problems with the IOS system on the website. As long as the problems with the system are being rectified, the people wishing to obtain liquor licenses are being directed to make arrangements for daily issuance of liquor licenses in all the offices of the Superintendent/Secondary Inspectors and the Superintendent's Offices of the State Excise Department.

Moreover, now a person can avail this liquor license by paying a fee of ₹100 for one year or ₹1,000 for a lifetime license. This would make it possible to take advantage of the liquor home delivery service by getting liquor consumption licenses without crowding in front of liquor shops and flouting social distancing norms amidst the pandemic.
