During the lockdown, the Maharashtra government has allowed the home delivery of liquor. You might think that it is easy to get alcohol now. However, as per the Bombay Prohibition Act, you require a license in order to drink alcohol.

If you don’t have this license, you won’t be able to order alcohol. A liquor permit is necessary to drink, even at home and the same is issued by the Maharashtra State Excise Department. The Bombay Prohibition Act is applicable in the state for the production, sale and consumption of liquor.

Now, to order alcohol, people in huge numbers are applying for a liquor permit on the state excise website. Meanwhile, only those who have a license under the Mumbai Foreign Liquor Rules, 1953, can deliver liquor while adhering to the conditions imposed by the Maharashtra government.

Earlier, the centre allowed the sale of liquor and huge crowds were seen outside the liquor shops. In order to tackle the crowd gathering, the Maharashtra government came up with a solution of home-delivery and allowed vendors to deliver liquor.

The state excise department has received nearly 1.54 lakh application for liquor permits from April 1 to September 11. Of these, only 1.49 lakh permits have been given. Moreover, exactly 17,236 crimes have been registered in Maharashtra and the state excise department has seized 1,626 vehicles for illegal smuggling of alcohol worth ₹39.83 crores.
