A 40-year-old teacher from a noted Mumbai school was arrested on Saturday, June 28, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. She repeatedly sexually abused a 16-year-old Class 11 student over a period of more than a year.

The teacher is reported to be married and has children. She first showed interest in the student during meetings to plan dance performances for the school’s annual function in December 2023. She allegedly made her first sexual move in January 2024.

According to the complaint, the teacher gave the student anti-anxiety pills and told him, “We were made for each other.” At first, the boy was uncomfortable and began to avoid her. Later, the teacher contacted him through one of her female friends, who is not a student at the school.

The friend told the boy that such relationships between teenage boys and older women were now common. Police said she also repeated the teacher’s line, saying they were “made for each other.” After this, the boy agreed to meet the teacher.

Police said the teacher picked him up in her sedan, drove to a remote place, and forcefully undressed and assaulted him. After the incident, when the boy experienced severe anxiety, she gave him more anti-anxiety pills. The police have seized the car used in the first assault.

Following this, she took him to several five-star hotels in South Mumbai and near the airport. There, they had repeated sexual encounters. Police said she often gave him alcohol before the meetings.

The school is reportedly known for its high-profile alumni. The teacher is in police custody until Wednesday.

The student’s family also noticed changes in his behaviour a few months after the abuse began. When they confronted him, he told them about the incidents. However, the family remained quiet at first, hoping the teacher would stop as the boy was nearing graduation.

The boy left the school after his board exams but fell into depression. The situation worsened when the teacher tried to contact him again through one of his household staff. She asked the staff member to arrange a meeting with the boy.

This led the family to finally approach the police and file a complaint. Police have now booked the teacher under several charges, including sections 4, 6, and 17 of the POCSO Act, as well as relevant parts of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice Act.
