A 12-year-old boy died after falling into a lift shaft while playing hide-and-seek with friends at a residential building in Mumbai's Nehru Nagar area on Monday, police said.
The victim was playing with other children at Shamim Tower when the accident occurred. According to police, the boy was hiding near the elevator on the 10th floor and reportedly leaned against the lift door. The door suddenly opened, causing him to fall into the shaft.
Residents rushed to the spot and alerted emergency services. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and launched an investigation into the incident. Officials are examining whether the lift malfunctioned or if any negligence in maintenance or safety measures contributed to the fatal accident.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over elevator safety in residential buildings, with authorities expected to inspect the lift and record statements from residents and building management as part of the investigation.
